Sugar has only been home for five days now, but she’s settled nicely into her new herd and seems only mildly bothered by the abundance of flies here in Arkansas. 🤪
My husband and I drove (I should really say my husband drove while I rode shotgun) six hours to Quincy, IL to pick her up. It was an emotional day. I cried happy tears when we arrived, but they were mixed with sadness as we left, because the couple Sugar had been living with were heartbroken to see her go.
Their lives are changing as they get older, and they needed to lesson their work load to accommodate some health problems, etc. One of the Sanskrit words I keep in mind during times like these is parinama, or constant change. Constant change is the only guarantee we really have as humans… and we usually suck at dealing with uncertainty. Or is that just me? 😉 It’s hard to make the choice to sell an animal, but all we can do is what we feel is best in the moment, and then hope we were right.
Sugar is still having an issue with one of her front feet/legs, but it’s not so severe that she isn’t running through the field and kicking her heels up at the boys as they work out their pecking order.
I’ve got the best farrier around (hi, Kristin!) and the equine chiropractor scheduled for the same day in a couple weeks, and I can’t wait to find out more about the possibility of a full recovery. 🤞🏼
Here are some photos from our trip (if you follow me on Insta, you may have already seen them):
👆🏼 Lots of time in the trailer and stopping every couple hours to make sure she was doing alright.
👆🏼 Her first moments home and meeting the boys over the fence. They were 😍!
I’m still a little baffled that she’s really back, and though I can tell she remembers me, I can also tell that she notices how I’m a little different now. I’m more confident in my horsemanship, and I hope we’re both enjoying the process of building a new relationship together.
That’s all for now, folks. I’ll keep you posted!
Take care and have a great weekend,
Hannah
