I met one of my dear friends, Ashley, when we were both “youngins” as we say in the South. I was in my mid-20’s and teaching a lot of classes at my dance studio. I was also getting ready to start a family, wondering how in the world I was going to manage both my business and motherhood.
Ashley, a long-time dancer from Texas, showed up unexpectedly, early in her college years and missing dance terribly after moving away from home. She started by taking one of my classes and then became a teacher and eventually the studio manager.
We became fast friends, and as you can imagine, we’ve been through a lot together. Because of her, I got the maternity leave of my dreams when my second kiddo was born. ❤️🙏🏻
Having a long-time relationship like this is amazing for so many reasons, one big one being the reflections I receive from someone who knows me so well. As a Manifestor in Human Design, I don’t always know my impact (which is part of why I love to hear from you in the comments or my inbox), so I value Ashley’s reflections more than she probably realizes.
I’ll never forget her telling me a few years ago that I’ve repeated one particular phrase to her enough times that she now hears my voice in her head (muahaha). I wasn’t aware back then, but over the years, when she asked me what I thought she should do about x, y, or z, I always said, "You should do whatever you want."
Honestly, it made me kind of proud. It’s pretty good advice!
Learning that I’d made an impact like that, without even meaning to… It reminded me that we leave legacies in tons of places that we never realize. By just showing up as ourselves, we all make an impact - without doing anything big or extravagant or feeling like we’ve truly found our purpose (does anyone, honestly, ever feel like they’ve found their “purpose”?)
And what if that’s enough? What if it doesn’t have to be such a big deal?
I always think about how I want to live a simpler, more soulful life, but I’m also not willing to leave behind my desire for impact and accomplishment and self-expression. I want both.
So I love this reminder that by simply “doing whatever I want”, I can have both. And slowing down and enjoying this wild, human ride a little more is actually the way.
Start doing what you want to do, and everything else will be revealed to you. - Paulo Coelho
If you’ve been craving a permission slip of your own, or you’ve been waffling between your own x, y, or z, you can imagine us cozied up with a cup of tea, you and me, like old friends. You lay it all out on the table, and I listen and nod and smile. And if you do eventually ask, “What do you think I should do?“ I’ll say, with a sense of peace in my heart (and excitement for the path ahead of you), “Do whatever you want to do. Permission granted.”

Reminder: Human Design Sessions
I'm pausing one-on-one Human Design sessions beginning September 22. I'm planning on a busy fall, and I'll be prioritizing the growth of The Herd, prepping for the Journey On Podcast Summit, and taking a weekend trip or two. If I open sessions back up, it will be after the new year. Just FYI!
If you'd like to get on my calendar before this goes down, you can learn more first, or:
I'd love to dive into your chart and share some time together on good 'ole Zoom!
I love the Paulo Coelho quote. I often need reminding that I can do whatever I want and the rest will follow.
