I’ve always wanted to name our little farm. Except that it’s not really a farm, as we don’t grow much of anything (unless zinnias and yarrow count). And we don’t have enough land for it to be called a ranch - I actually looked up the definition once. 😂 Plus, ranches are more about shepherding cattle, sheep, etc. With 10 acres, and considering the horses, maybe our place is more like a “ranchette”?
Regardless, I was walking our property a few years ago… We have tons of big ole’ oak trees, covered in moss. I loooove moss. As I paused, took in the early autumn air, admired all the soft green… I had a stroke of insight!
I could name our place/farm/ranchette Mossy Oaks! *cue lots of initial excitement*
And then very quickly, with a second stroke of insight, I remembered that Mossy Oak is the name of a brand that sells camouflage hunting gear and features photos of dead deer and squirrels all over its website. Not exactly the magical connotations I was going for. 🤦🏻♀️
It gave me a good chuckle at least.
It also reminded me that:
Historically speaking, naming things has not been my strong suit, and
Words really do matter. There’s definitely something in a name.
Which brings me to your input…
As this human herd grows here on Substack, I’ve been contemplating the name, The Herd. Is it vibing with the folks who read these weekly newsletters? Does it resonate with where I think we’re headed? Is The Herd inspiring? Fun to be a part of?
And for your additional consideration: Wild Horses. How does Wild Horses make you feel, taking into account what you typically read here? Any interesting images or associations come to mind? How does it compare to The Herd?
I’m gearing up for some new offerings this fall. Think workshops on Human Design, live guided meditations, or maybe even interviews with some of my favorite horsey friends. If I’m going to sprinkle in some newness, it could the perfect time for a name change, too!
So I’ve set up a poll - just click your preference below. And feel free to expand on it in the comments. I’m a splenic manifestor, so there’s really no telling what I’ll do. 🤪 But I’d be thrilled to have your input.
Either way, I’m waving from a little valley in the Ozarks to wherever you are in the world. 👋🏼 I’m really happy you’re here!
Lastly, as usual, you can check out current ways to engage with my work below. 👇🏼

Journey On Podcast Summit - Livestream
Date: November 2-6
Where: San Antonio, TX
Warwick Schiller’s Journey On Podcast Summit will be a gathering of horse people, but it's not actually about horses. It's about the practice of being human and learning to connect with our horses and everything else in our lives in a more authentic, attuned, resilient way. I'm really excited about it!
I’ll be presenting with an amazing group of teachers, scientists, coaches, wisdom keepers, and horse people. The whole event will be live-streamed (recordings included if you can’t watch in real time)! Cost: $99
I think you could name your farm Moss Oak and not be related to the hunting gear. Or even Oak Moss Farm
Like Anita, I like Moss Oak - kind of fell in like with it actually and felt disappointed that it was 'taken'. I am thinking how many, many businesses use the same names: Main Street Deli or Acme anything and so forth. That said, given the choices: I love the Herd and I love Wild Horses for different reasons. Perhaps a body scan to see which one evokes (and invokes) the energy you are wanting to bring to your own life.
